5 Common Misconceptions About Ziptrak®

Ziptrak® blinds have become a popular outdoor blind solution for homeowners who want to maximise their balcony or patio space. Despite that, there are still persistent myths that cause people to overlook what these blinds can actually do.

This guide clears up five common misconceptions about Ziptrak® Singapore installations. By the end, you will know if your hesitation to get these blinds is justified or based on a myth.

Myth 1: Blinds Close Off Balconies

Many homeowners fear that enclosing a balcony removes its openness, both visually and in terms of airflow. In reality, Ziptrak® blinds give you even control over when the space stays open and when it needs protection.

The blind can be raised or lowered to any height, so you can leave it at half height to enjoy the breeze on cooler evenings. Openness also depends partly on the fabric you choose.

Options such as PolyWeave 1% and FiberWeave 1% have a tight weave with tiny openings making up about 1% of the surface of the fabric. These openings allow some light, airflow and outward visibility even when the blinds are fully lowered.

FiberWeave 1% is a Singapore-exclusive fabric designed to provide improved outward visibility. However, it offers slightly less privacy than PolyWeave 1%, as visibility into the space may increase at night when indoor lights are on.

This flexibility means your balcony does not need to feel like a sealed box when Ziptrak® blinds are installed. It can become a semi-enclosed extension of your other spaces instead, whether that happens to be a home office or a lounge.

Myth 2: All Blinds Work in the Same Way

Absolutely not. Ziptrak® blinds are track-guided blinds, which means the fabric slides inside tracks instead of hanging loose.

Here is how they differ from ordinary roller blinds:

  • Track design
A patented side spline, with an edge inspired by sailboat sails, locks the fabric into the track.

  • Fabric tension
The fabric stays taut, so it does not flap compared to basic drop-down or roller blinds in gusty conditions.

  • Weather performance
The tighter seal helps shield against wind-driven rain and harsh sun, which is typical of Singapore’s tropical climate.

  • Ease of use
There are no exposed cranks or cords with Ziptrak®. You can also choose manual, motorised, or DualDrive® (which offers both manual and motorised operations) options. With an added bridge, motorised versions can even be set up to lower automatically using weather sensors whenever it rains.
    ‍

Ziptrak® also has a PanoView® system that means a single blind can span up to six metres without a centre post. This can provide a more uninterrupted view across wider openings.

Myth 3: Blinds Only Help When It Rains

Rain protection is only the beginning. Depending on which fabric you choose, Ziptrak® blinds can also reduce sun glare and UV exposure, as well as keeping out dust.

For privacy and light control, Ziptrak® offers fabrics with different levels of openness and light filtration, including options designed for greater privacy or light blockage. Acoustic fabric options can also provide sound-dampening properties.

Pest management is covered too. The PestOut® pelmet, which houses the rolled fabric at the top of the blind, features a dual-brush insert designed to help prevent insects from entering or nesting within the pelmet.

This shows how Ziptrak® blinds can provide an upgrade to your semi-outdoor spaces even beyond the weatherproofing element.

Myth 4: Maintenance Is Costly

Homeowners naturally worry about the upkeep of blinds. However, Ziptrak® blinds are actually designed for long-term outdoor exposure, using durable materials and reliable side-splines.

Selected Ziptrak® fabrics are treated with Microban® antimicrobial protection as well, which helps inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, mould and mildew on the fabric surface. Routine cleaning is simple: use Swiftee® outdoor blinds cleaner on sunscreen mesh or clear PVC blinds, and ensure PVC blinds are dried with a soft, clean cloth before rolling them up.

In addition, the dual brushes in the PestOut® pelmet sweep gently across the surface of the fabric to brush away dust, dirt, and light debris automatically every time you raise or lower the blind fabric.

With appropriate care and maintenance, the blinds are designed to require relatively simple routine maintenance. Ziptrak® even offers a 5-year warranty for the product, signalling the brand’s confidence in the quality of these blinds.

Myth 5: Blinds Cannot Reduce Noise

Outdoor blinds are rarely the first thing homeowners consider when they want a quieter home. And yet, blinds fabrics, such as RainOut® Acoustic fabric, can offer sound-dampening.

The fabric is a fibreglass-based solution that is available in nine colours. In third-party laboratory testing, RainOut® Acoustic fabric was reported to reduce sound levels by 11.9 dB under the specified test conditions.

A reduction of 10 dB typically represents a noticeable reduction in sound intensity. Pair that with the blinds’ track-guided side spline, which reduces gaps through which sound can enter.

This allows Ziptrak® blinds to help you create a calmer and quieter outdoor space, even when your area happens to face a busy road or something like an MRT line. This makes Ziptrak® an option worth considering for outdoor spaces, where reducing the impact of surrounding noise is an important consideration.

Make an Informed Choice for Your Home

Every home or outdoor space faces different sun, wind, and noise challenges. Some homeowners may be more concerned about rain ingress while others may worry more about pests.

This means that the Ziptrak® configuration that suits your neighbour may not necessarily be the one that suits you. Understanding what Ziptrak® blinds can offer can help you determine whether the system and fabric combination is suitable for your space.
